Kyle and Janelle (Novotny) Smith had Kade in Casper, Wyoming, on June 10, 2008. Kade scared his parents early on. He examined everything since crawling. After standing, he ran. Except to guide his brothers Gradey and Mason, he rarely looked back. Mama Janelle wasn’t sure if the lesson was brotherly love or adventure. He was naturally good at protecting his family and causing trouble. His infectious smile kept him in good graces frequently.
Smiths raised Kade largely in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He did 4H, baseball, football, wrestling, camping, fishing, hunting, and memory-making. Kade was good at anything he liked. Passion and perseverance won him the competition. Showmanship, marksmanship, or capturing bigger fish than his brothers. He was always connected to his cousins. That may be a UW football game, his first downhill sled ride, stinking up a cousin sleepover, or hunting with his best friend and father. Smiths liked Rock Springs. Moving and packing were hard. The family expected a little ranch. Kade felt at home in Shepherd, Montana, where the family moved in 2019. Small rural town fits well.
Kade never altered. Jumped headfirst, beaming. Get to the top of Shepherd football and Mustang wrestling easily. He governed mats. Kade won a game that required discipline, mental toughness, and effort. Getting to state his first year demonstrated it. He received his greenhand degree, discovery pin, state pin, and Ag Mechanics and Code of Conduct team membership in a blue corduroy FFA jacket. He was a great student and high school student activities advisory council wrestling rep when his social life didn’t distract him. Kade adored his friends. He was early to learn about small-town occurrences. He and buddies ran for Baskin Robbins ice cream when not dieting for wrestling.
His favourite spot was outside. He enjoyed working with both parents and brothers. Fencing, feeding, moving square bales. He started each work fast and never quit. His father’s assistant. The T4 Plaff Ranch kept him busy this summer chopping and storing hay, irrigating, and learning to think quickly and solve issues as a ranch hand. While learning mechanics, he enjoyed fixing the Smith house’s many damaged items. Mom’s grandfather Doug Novotny and uncle Jeff hugged Kade in heaven. His parents Kyle and Janelle and brothers Gradey and Mason Smith live. His grandmother, Nancy Novotny. Keta and Richard ‘Red’ Smith grandparents. Uncle Clint and Dani Smith, Aunt Erin and Dylan Hager, Paul and Jessie Smith. Bryce, Addison, Garrett, Nells, Callum. Kade had loved ones, teammates, classmates, and supporters.
