Thousands converge on small Canterbury settlement for highland games

By Amelia Brooks

Thousands donned traditional Scottish kilts as they gathered for the 12th annual Highland Games at Hororata today.

The population of the small Canterbury settlement swelled from just 300 to over 10,000 during the event.

Starting as a result of the earthquakes, its one of the biggest Scottish gatherings in the Southern Hemisphere.

"We were really severely hit and we really felt that we needed something that brought our community together in a different and unique way," said Hororata Community Trust chair Ainsley Walter.
