LAHAINA — Reese Guzman of Kahului tempered her expectations for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Match Play Championship.

“I didn’t do horrible so I’m pretty happy,” she said Saturday. “Sometimes my driver worked, sometimes it didn’t, but that’s just golf.”

The 16-year-old played far better than her words indicated — the Maui High School junior needed

just 23 holes at the Kaanapali Kai Course to reach today’s girls 13-18 semifinals. Guzman won 8 and 7 over Katherine Swor of Wailuku in the quarterfinals after opening with an 8-and-6 victory over Joy Callinan of Makawao.

Guzman, who will face Oahu’s Allysha Mae Mateo in the semifinals, is playing competitively for the first time since returning home from the Mainland, where she took part in eight tournaments. She won two American Junior Golf Association events and had two other top-five finishes.

“This tournament I just wanted to have fun and see my friends again because I was gone the whole summer,” Guzman said. “I was trying to play my own game as usual.”

Guzman has made a verbal commitment to play for Pepperdine. She said she also received offers from Notre Dame, San Diego State, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska.

“I really like that school because I have family in California so it’s easier for me and it’s only one flight away from home,” she said. “The coaches are really nice and I already know some of my teammates over there because I played with them in the summer. I had a really good feeling about the team so I felt more comfortable there.”

Jordan Terada of Kahului advanced to the boys 15-18 semifinals by defeating Reynn Hoshide of Mililani 2 and 1. Terada had a first-round bye.

“I felt like I played pretty solid today,” he said. “Toward the end I was not as hot, but it’s OK. It was enough. I was pretty happy with how I did.”

Terada will face Kauai’s Rilen Loo in the semifinals.

“It’s hard to worry about other people, but I had a really good match with Reynn and it will really prepare me for tomorrow,” he said.

Wailuku’s Chad Lee staged a late rally before losing 1 up to Oahu’s Kolbe Irei.

Lee was down two holes after six but pulled even at the turn before again falling behind by two.

A 15-foot putt by Irei ended the match.

“I didn’t start out well so I kind of put myself in a hole, but it was good to get it all the way to 18,” Lee said. “My opponent made some clutch putts at the end so he deserved to win.”

Wailuku’s Ryan Chang opened with an 8-and-7 win over Kauai’s Jaydon Kyono, then lost 2 up to Davis Lee.

“I was down three going into the last three holes and made a little push at the end, but I got a little unlucky on the last hole,” Chang said. “I was behind a tree and that didn’t end up going too well.”

Lana Calibuso-Kwee of Wailuku got to the girls quarterfinals before losing 3 and 2 to Oahu’s Danielle Ujimori.
